The History of Camp Chef
Camp Chef has been leading the pellet grill industry for over 20 years. And not just on pellet grills; the company manufactures approximately all outdoor cooking equipment.
It doesn’t matter whether you need some outdoor cooking done for campouts, dinners, or a neighborhood party, the Camp Chef has got your back.
The manufacturer established Camp Chef with the vision to provide the community with every necessary equipment for a better outdoor cooking experience.
Camp Chef discovered that most sportsmen and campers wished they were able to cook outdoors. Unfortunately, no cooking equipment was designed to meet their needs.
That’s why Camp Chef came in to create a stove that caters to the needs of outdoorsmen.
Today, the company now manufactures various types of equipment to simplify the outdoor cooking experience.
However, Camp Chef has it’s headquarter in cake Valley, Utah. And its products are manufactured to fulfil the needs of highly esteemed customers.
Why Should You Buy from Camp Chef?
Most of Camp Chef grills usually reach over 500°F. Something I found higher than most pellet grills I reviewed.
Also, most of their products can be operated from more than one source of fuel. For instance, Camp Chef wood can be run on propane gas and wood pellets. So you don’t have a problem cooking outdoor or from the backyard.
They are usually portable and designed to be compact. That way, you can easily clean, store, and generally maintain them.
The Best Camp Chef Pellet Smokers and Grills for 2024
Here at Cooking For Profit, we’ve tested different types of Camp Chef grills and smokers. Also, we engaged the services of everyday people who use this product to get a detailed and comprehensive review. However, we selected these pellet grills based on their price and features.
Let’s get started with the best 3 Camp Chef pellet grills.
1. Camp Chef SmokePro SG Wood Pellet Grill Smoker
The set and forget feature of this grill from Camp Chef makes it one of the reasons it made it to the top of our Camp Chef pellet grill reviews. PG24DLX is super easy to use and fully automated to your utmost convenience and satisfaction.
Also, our research team confirmed that Camp Chef PG24DLX has the most number of positive reviews on Amazon. More thanks to its number of great features like the digital temperature control, auto auger dispenser, ash cleanout system, meat probe, etc. It is also selling at a fast rate.
I highly commend the build quality of this DLX series pellet grill, as many users claimed to be using the pellet grill for over 4 years without a fault.
You can use this grill to smoke, grill, bake, roast, and barbeque- versatile, even at a competitive price.
Let’s get into details about the Camp Chef PG24DLX.
Build quality
If you want an excellent outdoor cooking experience, you’ll consider the build quality of your product. This pellet grill from Campchef doesn’t disappoint.
Lucky, Campchef incorporated a heavy metal construction into this model. However, the 127lbs metal unit feels sturdy and durable. I must commend the Camp Chef for investing a lot in this unit. No wonder it is one of the most durable pellet grills on the market. Some parts of the pellet grill like the hinges and burn cup is replaceable, making it last longer.
Heat diffusers generally undergo thermal stress. That’s why Camp Chef manufactures this model using premium quality stainless steel material.
Hopper drain chute
This grill comes with a cool feature that I couldn’t find in many pellet grill models.
One of them is the pellet Hopper drain chute. This feature lets you quickly change your cooking flavor, allowing a better cooking experience.
Cooking space
The 429 square inches of cooking space with a 6 x 24 inches dimension, Camp Chef SmokePro SG, has all the sufficient space to cook your favorite BBQ.
At each side of the grill, you will find the shelves, sear box, utility racks, including some free cooking recipes and ideas to help you maximize your cooking efforts on the go.
Automatic shut off
I noticed that you could only find the automatic shut off feature in the DLX series. And it’s here with the Camp Chef PG24DLX. So you can be sure your pellet grill will shut down once the cooking process is completed.
SmokePro BBQ Sear Box
As you know, the majority of pellet smoker performs poorly with searing. And this pellet grill is not different.
Thankfully, Camp Chef comes with an option for searing, using the SmokePro BBQ Sear Box. What you have to do is to take off the shelf at the right side and add the sear burner.
Temperature Control
One of the best parts of the Camp Chef Woodwind SG 24 is its incredible temperature control feature. The auger automatically feeds your grill with the pellet to help it maintain a consistent temperature. I usually set the grill going on the desired temperature until the food is thoroughly cooked.
Going further, this pellet grill comes with temperature probes that monitor the temperature inside your grill. Thanks to the convection fan, your cooking temperature is accurately maintained to ensure that you don’t have a cold and hot area.
It also comes with additional features, including digital control smoke settings that allow you to set your grill to high and low or even to a shutdown mode. I love the high 25,000 BTU output. Also, the temperature range is between 160-500°F with high accuracy.
Easy to use
After buying, unbox your grill and start cooking right away. The instruction for assembly is quite easy to comprehend. It’s a step by step guide so you can quickly assemble your grill on the go.
Auto start ignition
Also, here’s the good part; you can easily power on your grill with the auto-start ignition feature. No need to use matches or burn your fingers anymore.
Ash cleanout system
Ash cleanout systems are one of the easiest ways to ensure that your grill is cleaned thoroughly. Thanks to the Camp Chef for incorporating this feature.
Beneath the smoke chamber is the ash cup that traps the ashes. However, note that not all the ashes are caught. But it does an excellent job of eliminating the ashes out of the firepots.
I’ll advise you to remove the ashes from the smoke chamber. I do this every time.
Also, the two-wheel system of this grill allows it to be movable. Feel free to transport your grill to the next neighborhood.
One year warranty
I was delighted with using this product. The one year warranty is a big plus and another way to assure its high-quality build.
Price
At a reasonably high price, this grill offers an incredible value for the money. Don’t be discouraged with the high expense; you’ll be getting an amount that supersedes the price.
In a nutshell
If you’re looking for a pellet grill that offers real value for the money, then you should look into the direction of Camp Chef SmokePro SG Wood Pellet Grill Smoker. It can withstand harsh weather conditions, built for utmost durability, and diverse enough to cook your favorite BBQ.

2. Camp Chef Woodwind SG 24 Pellet Grill with Sidekick Stove/Griddle Accessory – World’s Most Versatile Wood BBQ Grill
Okay, now let’s move to the second grill on our Camp Chef pellet grill review. I’ve been an avid user of Camp Chef pellet grill, and I’ve never regretted purchasing it.
Recently, Camp Chef came up with another model into the woodwind family, which is the Camp Chef Woodwind SG Pellet Grill.
As expected, the new grill is packed with features that I found incredible and breathtaking. And I’ll walk you through all of them comprehensively. Read on.
What’s included in the box?
When I got my SG from Amazon (pretty fast delivery), it was well packaged in a pallet and wasn’t challenging to assemble. I started with installing the chimney; put together the handles, legs, and gearbox, all under an hour.
Pre burn-in
It’s always common to have oils and residues used during manufacturing left in the grill. That’s why I always recommend doing a burn-in before the first use. That way, all the oils, and residues left won’t affect the taste of your cooking.
Run the grill at a 225°F temperature, for, probably, a few hours. And that’s all; you can enjoy your pellet grill on the go.
Slide and grill technology
Thanks to Camp Chef for this. What’s the slide and grill about?
It is a new technology introduced by the Camp Chef to help you experience grilling even from your smoker.
You can freely slide the heat deflector away from your firepot, allowing the flame to move up, for more heat to flow into the vents.
# Cooking Space
The initial woodwind comes at a cooking space of 400 square inches alongside a warming rack on top. I’ve cooked with it on several occasions, and it did just fine.
And as with the new SG model, the Camp Chef added another full-sized 400 square inches rack on top of the chamber. That’s a cooking space of a total of 800 square inches.
Okay, on the part of the cooking grates, Camp Chef split this model in half. I was happy to notice it.
The Hopper
On the previous woodwind model, the hopper comes at 18 pounds. Unfortunately, the majority of pellet bags are usually 20 pounds. This means that you have to leave some portions of your pellet somewhere. Luckily, SG provides a solution to this issue.
Now, it comes with 22 pounds pellet capacity. That way, it can hold as many pellets as possible. The front window of the SG is clear enough to let you see the number of pellets you have.
Ash Cup Cleanout
Beneath the smoke chamber is the ash cup that catches the ashes. However, note that not all the ashes are caught. But it does an excellent job of eliminating the ashes out of the firepots.
I’ll advise you to remove the ashes from the smoke chamber. I do this every time.
Gearbox
The sear box is one of the reasons why I included SG into our best Camp Chef pellet grill review. On the right side of this grill is the attached propane grilled sear box. And luckily, it cooks for over 900°F.
On the sear box, you will find a lid and a knob that monitors the heat level.
However, kindly note that you can select the SG with a griddle- it is called the sidekick. Just choose that option when purchasing.
The digital Controller
Like other pellet grills, the controller on SG does an average Job. It’s usually 25°F below or above the desired temperature and at an average temperature. We don’t complain since we were able to bake excellent cakes, pies, biscuits, and lots more.
In a nutshell
Camp Chef Woodwind SG is one of the best Camp Chef pellet grills on the market, especially with the additional cooking space plus the 22-pound hopper and the great racks. The sear box is also a great addition. Overall, it offers a great value for the money.
3. Camp Chef Pursuit Portable Pellet Grill
If there’s any better word to qualify this pellet grill from Camp Chef, obviously, it’s portability. Camp Chef Pursuit Portable Pellet Grill is the best bet to transport for your next camping trip.
What’s inside the box?
I love that the box containing the grill is huge and well protected from damage during shipment. So you will get your package, clean and scratchless.
The foldable legs below the grill make it a portable option for use. I found it super easy to unfold the legs and position it rightly, all within minutes though you may need a helping hand, but not necessary.
Here are what’s inside the box:
- Pellet grill
- 2 meat probes
- Controller
- Ash cleanout and locking clasps
- Bottle opener
Slide and grill
As with the SG, this pellet grill also features the slide and grill technology.
It is a new technology introduced by the Camp Chef to help you experience grilling even from your smoker.
You can freely slide the heat deflector away from your firepot, allowing the flame to move up, for more heat to flow into the vents.
This pellet grill doesn’t have a chimney, but it lets the smoke go out through the cutouts.
Grates
Camp Chef PPG20 comes with Full grates at the top and bottom. Of course, this is an incredible feature for a pellet grill that is portable.
The grates, coming at 501 square inches, are 18.25 wide and 13.5 inches deep.
Hopper
I noticed that there is a locking clasp on the hopper, which keeps your pellet safe and intact when transported. The grate is also designed in a way that it prevents kids from having their hands stuck in the pellets when running.
As advised earlier: It’s always common to have oils and residues used during manufacturing left in the grill. That’s why I always recommend doing a burn-in before the first use. That way, all the oils and residue lefts won’t affect the taste of your cooking.
Run the grill at a 225°F temperature, for, probably, a few hours. And that’s all; you can enjoy your pellet grill on the go.
I wished the hopper on the grill comes with a pellet dump. But I don’t think that’s not a problem.
It’s not too hard to determine how many pellets you will need for a particular food. Make sure you add a pellet that’s enough for your cooking. However, 1lb of pellets per hour is fine. Make sure you monitor the pellet to see if it’s enough.
The leg doesn’t look stable. I feel it may collapse.
If you’re a regular fan of camping, then I recommend this best Camp Chef pellet grill. It is highly portable, and I’m quite sure you’re going to love it.
